Behind the dryer

Dryer vent cleaning for homes across Los Angeles County

A technician moves the dryer out, brushes and vacuums the lint from the duct all the way to the outside hood, then puts everything back and checks that air is leaving. Call (844) 966-2005 or send the form and tell us where the dryer sits.

Why people call about the vent

Most of these you can see or smell, and one of them means stop first.

  • A load comes out damp after a full cycle

Lint builds up in the vent and cuts airflow, and the U.S. Fire Administration says that can overheat the dryer. A load that needs two cycles is a fair reason to have the vent looked at.

  • The laundry room is hot and smells like burning

Stop the dryer and switch it off. A burning smell is a reason to check, not to run one more load. If you see smoke or flames, get out and call 911.

    Call any hour
  • There is lint piled up at the outside hood

Vents can be blocked by lint, bird nests or damage. A nest, piled lint or a flap that stays shut leaves the air little way out.

  • We moved in and nobody knows when the vent was last cleaned

Lint hides inside walls and above ceilings, where nobody looks. Starting from a vent known to be clear means you are not guessing.

  • The dryer works fine, so I never thought about the vent

Plenty of people feel that way. NFPA reports that failure to clean is behind about a third of home dryer fires, so out of sight is not the same as fine.

What happens on a vent visit

  1. Find the route

We find where the dryer sits and where the vent leaves the building: out a wall, up through the roof or out of a garage. The route tells us how far the cleaning has to reach.

  2. Disconnect the duct

The dryer is moved out far enough to detach the duct at the back. That is when we see whether the duct is crushed, loose or damaged, which is one more way a vent gets blocked.

  3. Clear the whole run

Lint is brushed loose and vacuumed out along the duct, from the dryer end to the outside hood. At the hood we clear lint and any nest so the flap can open.

  4. Put it back and test

The duct is reconnected and the dryer goes back in place. Then it runs while we check for air leaving at the hood.

  5. Tell you what we saw

A crushed section, a loose joint, a hood that does not open: you hear about it. Repairs are a separate conversation and not part of this cleaning.

Why the vent run matters in Los Angeles

Dryers in Los Angeles homes and apartments often sit in a closet, a garage or a laundry nook, so the vent may run a long way, with turns, to reach the outside. More distance and more bends give lint more places to settle, and a long, bent run is harder for you to check by eye.
  • NFPA’s Home Dryer Fires report (June 2020) estimates about 13,820 home fires a year in which a dryer was involved in ignition, and about a third were caused by failure to clean.Source
  • The U.S. Fire Administration names failure to clean as the leading factor in residential clothes dryer fires, and says lint is highly combustible.Source

Between visits

Clean the lint screen before or after every load. When you can, pull the dryer forward and check the duct: crushed, loose or old? Then stand outside while the dryer runs and watch the hood. The flap should open and warm air should come out.

Questions about dryer vent cleaning

How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?
There is no single interval. A long vent run or a lot of laundry means sooner, and loads that need two cycles are a sign not to wait. The lint screen and the outside hood show you a good deal between visits.
Can I clean the dryer vent myself?
Partly. The lint screen, the visible duct and the outside hood are in your reach. The long run inside a wall or ceiling is the hard part.
My dryer takes two cycles now. Is it the vent?
It can be, because lint in the vent cuts airflow and the clothes stay damp. Start with the lint screen, and if loads are still coming out damp, have the vent looked at.
Do you clean vents in apartments and businesses?
We work in homes and businesses across all 88 cities of Los Angeles County. For an apartment or a shop, tell us where the dryer sits and how the outside hood can be reached.

  • Allison C.

I particularly liked the way the lead cleaner described the PH balance of the solutions that they were using on our carpets. The acidic neutralizing rinse makes sure the floor doesn’t feel crunchy or sticky when it is dry. That extra step means our floors are very silky and totally residue-free.

  • Crystal M.

My kids have turned the giant living room ottoman into a trampoline and it's forever soiled with imprints. Steam cleaning the hefty cloth removed all the dark grime and restored the original bright blue hue. The furniture which is the focus is clean and the living space appears a lot tidier today.

  • Daniel R.

Thick outdoor seats were covered in tree algae and bird poop. Power-washings of the tough material killed any dirt from outside. We are pleased to be hosting barbecues from our clean chairs again.
