The sixties, a fire zone and cool coastal air

Housing here is mostly a product of the sixties: nearly four homes in ten were built in that decade, and more than eight in ten predate 1980. That age is why the carpet’s history is worth mentioning when you call. Portuguese Bend, Eastview and Miraleste are the neighborhood names, and the whole city, from the coast up to Miraleste, is inside the service area.

Portuguese Bend and the Palos Verdes Nature Preserve hold the largest area of natural vegetation left on the peninsula. Native vegetation is also fuel, and more than a third of the city sits in the Very High fire hazard tier.

Summers stay mild and hot days are rare, so cool coastal air and morning damp matter more for drying than heat does. Tap water comes through Cal Water’s Palos Verdes system from the Metropolitan Water District, and its hardness varies by treatment plant. Point Vicente Lighthouse, on a high coastal cliff, is on the National Register.

A hillside city of owners

  1. Four in five own

About four homes in five are lived in by their owners, and about three in four units are single-family houses. Roughly one unit in seven is in an apartment building, so say which kind of home yours is.

  2. A peak in the sixties

Nearly four in ten homes date from the sixties. Give the carpet’s age and fiber if you know them, and keep any care label, since the Carpet and Rug Institute says skipping the maker’s maintenance can void a warranty.

Houses first, with a smoke question in the background

With mostly single-family houses, carpet cleaning and rug cleaning lead, and upholstery cleaning covers the furniture that sits on them. Houses in or beside the fire zone add a question about smoke and ash, where no result on fabric can be promised.

I particularly liked the way the lead cleaner described the PH balance of the solutions that they were using on our carpets. The acidic neutralizing rinse makes sure the floor doesn’t feel crunchy or sticky when it is dry. That extra step means our floors are very silky and totally residue-free.

My kids have turned the giant living room ottoman into a trampoline and it's forever soiled with imprints. Steam cleaning the hefty cloth removed all the dark grime and restored the original bright blue hue. The furniture which is the focus is clean and the living space appears a lot tidier today.

Thick outdoor seats were covered in tree algae and bird poop. Power-washings of the tough material killed any dirt from outside. We are pleased to be hosting barbecues from our clean chairs again.

Questions from Rancho Palos Verdes

Should I move furniture before the visit?
The Carpet and Rug Institute’s checklist says to ask whether the firm moves furniture, so raise it when you call (844) 966-2005. Clearing small items and breakables off the floor helps either way.
Do you serve Portuguese Bend, Eastview and Miraleste?
Yes. All three are inside the service area, which is the whole county, and a street address on the form settles which one.
Does cool coastal air slow carpet drying?
It can, since humidity is one of the things that sets drying time. Keep the room ventilated, treat the 6 to 12 hours the institute gives as a typical range and not a promise, and call if carpet is still wet after that.
Can I phone about a stain late at night?
Yes. The office is open all night, every night, and the form takes a request whenever you have one.
