Foothills, wildfire exposure and one earthquake
Sierra Madre is a small city pressed against the mountains, and that foothill setting is the fact that matters most. More than half of the city’s land lies in the Very High fire hazard zone. After a fire, Los Angeles County Public Health says to wear an N95, use a HEPA-filter vacuum and wash or dispose of porous items such as carpets. FEMA’s smoke-damage guide adds that soot and ash can leave upholstery nearly impossible to clean. No promise can be made about bringing carpet or upholstery fully back, and the office will say so plainly.
Chimneys have a particular history here. The magnitude 5.8 earthquake of June 1991 knocked over chimneys and block walls in the area. The chimney-safety trade follows NFPA 211, which asks for an inspection at least once a year covering soundness, deposits and clearances, rarely used fireplaces included. Cleaning is one of our services, while whether a chimney is structurally sound is a question for an inspection.
Older homes at the foothill edge
Mostly mid-century homes
About three in ten homes predate 1950, and four in ten date from the two decades after. Mention the age of the carpet and whether the fireplace is in regular use.
SourceOwners slightly ahead of renters
A little over half of homes are owner-occupied, and six in ten units are detached houses. Roughly one unit in seven sits in a building of two to nine.
SourceAsh is not ordinary dust
The county says wildfire ash is relatively non-toxic but irritating, while ash from burned buildings may contain asbestos, arsenic and lead, and shop vacuums are not recommended for it.
SourceFew large buildings
Only about one unit in eight is in a building of ten or more, so a house or a small building is the usual starting point.

What tends to matter most in the foothills
For houses with fireplaces and furnaces, chimney cleaning and air duct cleaning come first. On ducts, the EPA reminds people that routine cleaning is not needed and that visible mold, vermin or heavy debris are the reasons to do it. Carpet cleaning and upholstery cleaning follow for everyday soil.
- Chimney cleaning in Sierra MadreSoot and deposits cleaned from fireplaces and chimneys. NFPA 211 calls for an inspection at least once a year, even if the fireplace is rarely used.
- Air duct cleaning in Sierra MadreFor ducts with visible mold, vermin or heavy dust and debris. EPA does not recommend it as a routine job, so ask us whether yours needs it.
- Carpet cleaning in Sierra MadreHot-water extraction, often called steam cleaning. Hot water and solution go in, and suction pulls the dirt back out.

I particularly liked the way the lead cleaner described the PH balance of the solutions that they were using on our carpets. The acidic neutralizing rinse makes sure the floor doesn’t feel crunchy or sticky when it is dry. That extra step means our floors are very silky and totally residue-free.
My kids have turned the giant living room ottoman into a trampoline and it's forever soiled with imprints. Steam cleaning the hefty cloth removed all the dark grime and restored the original bright blue hue. The furniture which is the focus is clean and the living space appears a lot tidier today.
Thick outdoor seats were covered in tree algae and bird poop. Power-washings of the tough material killed any dirt from outside. We are pleased to be hosting barbecues from our clean chairs again.
